- The Inkland - Ink Ballades
9 August to 7 September 2008
The
University Museum and Art Gallery of The University
of Hong Kong is pleased to present an exhibition
titled 'Ink Ballades'. This exhibition showcases
over 40 contemporary Chinese ink paintings by
22 members of 7A - The Inkland, which is named
after 7A Kennedy Road, the address of the Hong
Kong Visual Arts Centre, where all of the artists
studied Chinese calligraphy and ink painting under
prominent Hong Kong artists, in particular Leung
Kui Ting.
Since
the 1960s, Chinese ink painting in Hong Kong has
evolved into a contemporary artistic endeavour
under the influence of the renowned Chinese ink
painter Lui Shou-kwan who incorporated ideas from
the West with traditional ink painting methods,
launching the New Ink Painting movement. This
exhibition, Ink Ballades, is a testament to how
the New Ink Painting movement remains vibrant
within a contemporary context and into the 21st
century.
The
exhibition includes landscape; flower and plant
painting; Chinese calligraphy; and abstract works.
Traditional Chinese landscapes, as well as the
scenery of Hong Kong and Europe, are depicted
using an impressionistic technique in which scenes
are misty and indistinct. The composition of various
flower and plant paintings demonstrate the distinctive
characteristic of Chinese ink painting of retaining
blank areas to give depth and create rhythm in
the work. There are also calligraphic works in
various styles; and abstract works of subjects
such as human figures during rush hour and human
emotions, reflecting the artists' perception of
reality and subjectivity.
