80th Anniversary of the School of
Chinese
6 October to 11 November 2007
The
School of Chinese, and the University Museum and Art
Gallery of The University of Hong Kong are pleased
to present an exhibition celebrating 80th Anniversary
of the School of Chinese. On display will be a selection
of documents and old photographs of the school including
letters and original manuscripts of renowned scholars,
periodicals, students' theses as well as photographs
of teachers and students' activities over the past
80 years. The exhibits have been chosen to give viewers
a deeper understanding of the development of the school
over the past eighty years.
Many
renowned scholars have served in the school since
1927. Their major contributions lie in the cultivation
of talented students in Chinese learning, and the
development of Chinese language education. When the
school was still in its infancy, the study of Chinese
mainly focused on the Chinese Classics, history, literature
and poetry. In the 1930s, courses in Daoist history
and Chinese ethnology were also offered. Since the
1950s, courses have continued to include the fields
of Chinese archaeology and fine arts. In the 1960s,
new courses such as Chinese translation, modern literature
and modern Chinese language teaching were introduced.
Hence, an all round Chinese education encompassing
the disciplines of Chinese literature, history, philosophy
and translation have been accomplished.
