CHU TEH-CHUN - Of Snow, Gold and Sky Blue
23 April to 13 June 2010

As a programme of Le French May, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau and the University Museum and Art Gallery of The University of Hong Kong jointly present the exhibition "CHU TEH-CHUN - Of Snow, Gold and Sky Blue" at the Museum from 23 April to 13 June 2010.

A French painter of Chinese origin, Chu Teh-Chun was born in Jiangsu province of China in 1920. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China's first modern school of painting in 1935. After completing his studies Chu taught at the National Central University of Nanjing and developed his artistry in western oil painting. In 1949, he moved to Taipei and finally settled in Paris in 1955. He is considered one of the masters of modern Chinese painting alongside contemporaries such as Zao Wou-ki (b. 1920) and Wu Guanzhong (b. 1919).

In 2008-2009, Chu Teh-Chun painted a series of painted porcelains entitled De Neige, d'Or et d'Azur (Of Snow, Gold and Sky Blue) and produced them at the Sevres Manufacture near Paris in France. The present exhibition features fifty-six pieces of this collection of painted porcelains decorated with Sevres blue and gold, supplemented by three oil paintings of Chu Teh-Chun, including Untitled 1985, a large painting belonging to his famous snow scene series, and an abstract landscape entitled Hong Kong 1997.
