Early
Hong Kong Transport
28 March to 5 July 2009
This exhibition
is one of a series of exhibitions of Hong Kong
history held in collaboration with collector
Cheng Po Hung. It features some 100 old photographs
selected from Cheng's collection. Viewers can
have a glimpse of the early development of Hong
Kong public transportation over the past hundred
years.
Hong Kong, a
gateway to Asia, is geographically strategic
to some of the major travel routes in the world.
The city itself is advanced in its public transportation
and thus has open of the best transport systems
in the world. It is easy and quick to travel
around Hong Kong. Included in this exhibition
will be examples of different modes of public
transport such as the cross-harbour Star Ferry
and the Hong Kong Tram, a fleet of buses, subway
trains and taxis. Black-and-white images have
been chosen from old postcards to reflect how
Hong Kong developed from a sparsely populated
fishing village into one of the world's leading
centre in Asia.
To coincide with
this exhibition, a catalogue written by Cheng,
including 300 photographs on the subject, is
published.
