The Cloud
and Mist Weaver: Paintings by Koo Mei
8 July to 13 September 2009
Koo Mei is
a renowned Shaw Brothers movie star and
singer from the 1960s. She is widely known
as the "little lark" and sang
many of the unforgettable songs like Endless
Love and the Girls of Ali Mountain.
Born in Guangzhou
in 1929, Koo grew up in a period of extreme
hardship in twentieth century China. She
has been deeply passionate about the art
of painting from an early age. Even while
she was pursuing her singing and acting
careers, her desire to develop her painting
skills was so great that she went in search
of masters like Chao Shao-an, Hu Nien-tsu
and Lui Shou-kwan. However, bearing the
influence of her teachers, she took the
best from them and proceeded on her own
course of development and the pursuit of
the arts as her ultimate goal in life.
This exhibition
highlights the achievements of Koo in ink
painting. The over fifty works included
in this exhibition shows how she has pursued
a more realistic representation of landscape
rendered in a lyrical atmosphere in her
use of brushwork and ink wash.
A fully illustrated
catalogue will accompany this exhibition.
