Beyond the Clouds: Canada through the Eyes of Yukman Lai
20 January to 25 February 2007

The Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong and the University Museum and Art Gallery of The University of Hong Kong are pleased to present an exhibition of recent ink paintings by Yukman Lai.

Born in Guangzhou, China in 1949, Lai moved to Hong Kong and Macau to continue his education. In 1989, his ink works were awarded first class prize in the China Taipei Cup Competition of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy. The Lai family moved to Canada in 1990 and Lai has since become a prominent educator, promoter and artist of ink painting and calligraphy in Canada and throughout the Asia Pacific region. At present, Lai is the Adjunct Professor at the David Lam Centre for International Communication at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.

This exhibition features over 30 works from the artist's 2005 to 2006 series depicting Lai's impressions of nature in North America. The prevailing themes of his ink on paper works are landscapes, plants, wildlife and the changing seasons. Paintings of similar themes by Lai are in the permanent collections of North American museums and institutions, the Canadian Embassy in Beijing and the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Lai's paintings and calligraphy have also featured on postage stamps issued by Canada Post.

This exhibition has just completed a successful tour of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The Hong Kong exhibition will conclude the exhibition's China tour.

*To accompany the exhibition, the Museum will organise a painting demonstration by the artist from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon on Saturday 20 January at the Fung Ping Shan Building, the University Museum and Art Gallery. The demonstration is in Cantonese. Free admission and open to the public. Enquiry: 2241 5500
