The Unified Stroke: Calligraphy by Lo Hon Yiu

12 November 2008 to 4 January 2009

The University Museum and Art Gallery of The University of Hong Kong is delighted to present an exhibition entitled "The Unified Stroke" which features 41 calligraphic works by Lo Hon Yiu, an alumnus of the University.

A self-taught calligrapher, Lo is a graduate in philosophy and political science. He currently works as a barrister. Lo has integrated his knowledge of Western philosophy with Chinese calligraphy over the years to create his own unique style of cursive script.

Lo is not content to simply copy the form of Chinese characters, stroke by stroke, but rather seeks to gain the essence of calligraphy. Thus, Lo is particularly interested in cursive script, as it is the most expressive form of calligraphic writing. He uses his own unique brushwork to reveal the strong flow of energy that is the spirit of cursive script. The characters vary in size and brushstroke, and are highly rounded in appearance; they are connected by flowing brushstrokes. His calligraphy insists in us, feelings of harmony.

A fully-illustrated catalogue will be published to coincide with this exhibition.
