Colours of Nature:
Orchids of Hong Kong
4 March
to 19 April 2009
This photographic
exhibition is curated by Ms. Gloria Siu Lai-ping,
a scholar of orchids, and the photographs are
taken by Dr. Poon Tak Lun. Both of them are alumni
of The University of Hong Kong.
Orchids have just
been described as "the royal family"
of the plant world. This family (Orchidaceae)
is also one of the most evolved and diversified
of the entire plant kingdom. They have always
fascinated people with their beautiful, colourful
and unique flower structures. There are about
123 native species of orchids found in Hong Kong,
of which more than ten species are endemic to
Hong Kong while dozens are locally rare nowadays.
Although Hong Kong is such a small place, the
total number of native orchids is twice as many
as that recorded in the U.K. (i.e. about sixty
species). Shown in this exhibition will be over
50 photographs of some of these natural treasures
of Hong Kong.
